Portrait In Sparkle

Shari Pedowitz

Glitter courses through me to the extent it’s probably like 72% of my body and soul (the rest is chocolate and ocean water). There is something about the sparkle and shine of it that gets me. I can wander into any craft store and just stare for a long time at all of the colors, sizes and shapes. Naturally, I have bottles and jars and packets of the stuff in my studio. But I always need more. I will grab a few tubes of paint and some canvas, but my cart will be full of twinkling joy. My makeup and nail polish varies from light shimmer to disco ball and I love to play with them. My sunscreen has glitter and I’ve used it in my art.

It’s not an addiction or an obsession, it’s a core element of my life. My ideal home décor was correctly identified by an online quiz as glitter futurism. Fine shimmer, large flakes, color-shifting squares – all of it brings me a sense of euphoric calm. When I paint on canvas, I add a drop of glitter here, half a bottle there. I look at the glitter that splattered everywhere and admire how it adds to my space. I even use glitter effects in my digital art, layers of it. I always step back from my latest work of sparkling

passion and smile.

The only time I ever thought glitter may be a problem was when my dog, Star, stepped in some when she decided to help with a painting, the appropriately titled Naughty Naughty.

Let me tell you, it is very difficult to remove glitter and paint from paws, but she did look adorable and was rewarded for her patience. I was still finding glitter on myself even after a shower and just laughed it off, wanting to paint again, so I did. That painting is titled I Always Sparkle.
